Member Rich Coury, PT, MPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS, owner of Coury & Buehler Physical Therapy with seven offices in Orange County California, was part of a high-level White House meeting on December 6th. In attendance were President Trump, Vice President Pence, Elaine Chao Secretary of Transportation, Gene Scalia Secretary of Labor, Larry Kudlow Director of the National Economic Council, Brooke Rollins Chief of Office for American Innovation and representatives from the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Management and Budget, Small Business Administration, Domestic Policy Council, and eight private citizens representing small businesses around the country.

The reason for the meeting was so that the White House could hear about the regulatory burdens on small businesses, and their priorities for reducing those burdens. Rich used the opportunity to talk about the impact of regulation by CMS on private practice therapists and the impending cuts to Medicare reimbursement for 2021. Prior to the meeting Rich contacted PTPN and we got him in touch with PTPN’s political consultant in Washington, Alpha Lillstrom Cheng. Rich and Alpha met to discuss strategy and talking points. Alpha is also the lobbyist for the Private Practice Section and thus was well-position to confer with Rich.

Rich was able to make some key connections and speak with various influencers both during and after the meeting. He also left letters outlining the key issues with the people he spoke with. This was a great opportunity to bring the concerns of the private practice community to the highest levels and may lead to more meetings. We congratulate Rich for his great work here on behalf of his profession! As Alpha points out, with all advocacy it’s the cumulative effect of each meeting, each connection, and each conversation that allows us to make progress on our issues.

Together we can make a difference.
